Dr. Patricia Burke is an Associate Professor of Nursing at the Touro College School of Health Sciences in New York City. She was recently chosen as the new President-Elect of the New York League for Nursing (NYLN), a subsidiary of the National League for Nursing’s (NLN) professional organization for academic leaders in nursing. The NLN currently has 25 affiliated leagues serving 27 states.

As a native of Ireland, Dr. Burke began her education at the Northwick Park Hospital School of Nursing in London where she received her certification in midwifery. After later moving to New York, Dr. Burke became a staff nurse at Maimonides Medical Center and a Supervisor at Holy Name Hospital before moving onto Director of maternal-child health at New York Presbyterian Hospital.

Dr. Burke’s education expands beyond her certifications in London. She went on to earn her bachelor’s in nursing at Pace University, master’s in perinatal nursing at Columbia University, and maintains certification as an inpatient obstetric nurse. While serving as a faculty member at City University of New York, Dr. Burke developed workshops on technology integration and simulation in nursing education. She has published and presented papers about its use in nursing education at national and international conferences. Now at Touro College School of Health Science, Dr. Burke is a teacher for courses in maternal-child health, community service, and leadership.

In her position with the NYLN, Dr. Burke will chair the Strategic Planning and Program Committees responsible for the fall conference in New York. She is honored to be elected into her new position and thanks her mentors Dr. Lew-Snider, Dr. Karin Pantel, and Dr. Deborah Merriam. As President-Elect she hopes to form innovative partnerships between nurse educators in practice and college settings to support the NLN’s mission. Dr. Burke is expected to bring her leadership expertise, exceptional communication skills, and passion for research to the NYLN. Her enthusiasm for the nursing field will be an inspiration to students and faculty.

The NYLN is a strong advocate for excellence in education, a strong and diverse nursing workforce, and advances in healthcare at the state level. They offer professional development, research, student exam services, educator certification, and a forum for public policy to their members.
