BASIC DESCRIPTION

The emergency room nurse practitioner—an advanced practice role—delivers primary care in the emergency department. They could treat common urgent and nonemergency medical conditions in collaboration with the emergency room attending physician.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Registered nurse preparation, Nurse Practitioner certification, and Master of Science in Nursing are required; previous experience in emergency room or critical care nursing is often required for the position; certification as acute care nurse practitioner is offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center and by American Association of Critical Care Nurses.

CORE COMPETENCIES/SKILLS NEEDED

■ Excellent analytical and communication skills
■ Advanced training and education in the care of critically ill patients
■ Ability to work under pressure and make quick important clinical decisions
■ Excellent management and organization skills and ability to work with members of the health care team
■ Strong computer skills especially in the use of electronic health record/documentation
