BASIC DESCRIPTION

An infusion nurse has expertise in the field of infusion therapy. The infusion nurse’s role is to perform intravenous therapy as well as patient education regarding the task being performed. There are opportunities for infusion therapy nurses to work in hospitals, home care, and various alternative settings such as hospice or long-term care facilities.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Registered nurse preparation is required. Certification is available from the Infusion Nurses Certification Corporation.

■ Skill in venipuncture
■ Knowledge of ways to insure quality care to patients
■ Knowledge of nosocomial infection rates and prevention
■ Good interpersonal skills
