The Jonas Center for Nursing and Veterans Healthcare is dedicated to building the effectiveness of America’s professional nurses through four key programs that promote veterans’ healthcare and nursing scholars. Through two of their programs, the Jonas Nurse Leaders Scholars Program and Jonas Veterans Healthcare Program, the Jonas Center has created a national initiative to support 1,000 nurse scholars at 140 universities across all 50 states.

As part of that initiative, the Jonas Center awarded a grant of $10,000 to one doctoral nursing student at Oakland University School of Nursing. Oakland University also matched the grant with $10,000 of their own to fund the scholarship given to their student.

As a recipient of one of the Jonas Center grants, Oakland University’s School of Nursing has agreed to take part in the national effort to address the nursing faculty shortage and prepare the next generation of nurses. This is a critical effort as a continued clinical nurse shortage is expected along with an aging population that will require extensive care.[et_bloom_inline optin_id=optin_16]

Interim Dean of the School of Nursing, Gary Moore, is pleased to see Oakland University taking part in providing a solution to the nursing and faculty shortage. As more and more individuals receive access to healthcare and universities continue to lose their educators to higher paying jobs in the private sector, the need for nurses, nurse leaders, and nurse educators continues. With the help of the Jonas Center, Oakland University will be able to educate more nurses for faculty, leadership, and administrative positions.

The US is in serious need of more nurses, yet baccalaureate and graduate nursing programs turned away 70,000 qualified applicants in 2014 due to their insufficient number of staff. The Jonas Center for Nursing is taking a wonderful approach to the nursing shortage by funding graduate students who will become educators, allowing nursing schools to take on more students and output well educated and capable nurses.

Oakland University is proud of its DNP program and the faculty and clinical partners who help run it. Their courses focus on health priorities in patient safety, policy reform, and integrative health. The Jonas Scholars at Oakland’s School of Nursing begin their graduate degrees in fall 2016, and will be fully supported by their scholarships through completion of their doctoral degrees in 2018.
