The Villanova University  M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing recently received a $5 million commitment from alumna Deborah Silvers Adams and her husband, Nick Adams. The donation marks the largest philanthropic commitment in the history of Villanova Nursing. The Adams’ gift has been granted in honor of Dr. M. Louise Fitzpatrick, the College of Nursing’s beloved dean who passed away in September, leaving behind a legacy for the university.

Following Dr. Fitzpatrick’s passing last year, the Villanova College of Nursing was renamed the M. Louise Fitzpatrick College of Nursing in her honor in December 2017. University President Rev. Peter M. Donohue, OSA, PhD, stated in a press release: “I am humbled by the many ways that members of the Villanova community, like Dee and Nick, support the University and all that we do. Their generosity and commitment are truly transformative.”

Throughout her four decades as dean of the College of Nursing, Dr. Fitzpatrick made the College’s endowment a top priority. The Adams’ gift is expected to contribute to the College of Nursing’s future and enhance the academically challenging and personally transformative experiences that Villanova students receive. To date, more than $11 million in gifts and pledges have been made in honor of Dr. Fitzpatrick, according to Villanova.edu.

Deborah Silvers, who provided the $5 million commitment to Villanova, graduated from the Villanova College of Nursing in 1986. She tells Villanova.edu, “What I remember most about Louise was her relentless pursuit of expanding the curriculum for her students…We were inspired to make this gift out of our families’ dedication to medicine, medical research, and compassionate care of patients.”

This was not the first time the Adams’ have made a significant commitment to Villanova’s nursing program. They also made a $1 million commitment to the College of Nursing in 2017, establishing an endowed scholarship and providing funding for cancer-related research projects.
