BASIC DESCRIPTION

The disaster/bioterrorism nurse works in disaster areas that are the result of a bioterrorist attack or in situations caused by natural disaster, war, or poverty. Red Cross nurses are often part of the network that provides assistance during times of disaster or conflict. The nature of the work will vary depending on the course of the disaster or conflict.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Registered nurse preparation is required. Red Cross nurses must have special training and 20 hours of volunteer or paid service before being assigned to a disaster situation.

■ Emergency room or critical care experience
■ Experience with local disaster action teams
■ Management skills
■ Ability to meet the needs of people in crisis and high-stress situations
