Pamela Jeffries, PhD, RN, FAAN, ANEF, FSSH, dean of the George Washington University (GW) School of Nursing, has pledged to prioritize national prestige and diversity in her fifth year in the role, after focusing on growing the school’s academic and research enterprises the last four years.

Jeffries recognizes the ever-changing health care landscape and wants to prepare students for what they will face as health care providers in the real-world setting. She tells nursing.gwu.edu , “As a dean, I’ve got to make sure I’m looking forward, that our programs are going to suit the needs of the community and our profession in health care.”

Dean Jeffries will ensure that academic and research programs within the School of Nursing fit with the fluctuating financial, medical, and administrative demands of the health care environment. She will also prioritize recognizing student and faculty achievements, and implement a diversity advisory council to advance the school’s research and culture initiatives.

The GW School of Nursing drew in $4.1 million in research grants and awards last fiscal year. In turn, nursing school officials added research infrastructure to the school, including increasing the number of research administrators to help guide faculty through submission processes. Enhancing nursing research aligns with the school’s initiative of maintaining its reputation as a world-class research institution.

In her tenure as dean, Jeffries has seen nursing student enrollment nearly double, helping to fill a nationwide shortage of nurses. The number of students admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, Veterans Option, has also seen a large increase since its inception in 2015. The school has also added several new degree program options like a doctorate in nursing and doctoral degree of nursing practice in health policy, giving students more opportunities to pursue specialized career paths.
