Last week, the Bureau of Labor Statistics revealed that nursing is still growing – alongside the entire healthcare workforce in the February Jobs Report. The US economy added 57,000 new healthcare and social assistance jobs in February, with 24,000 new jobs in ambulatory care and 11,000 in hospitals. Over 181,000 hospital jobs have been created over the past 12 months. In February, nursing homes saw a 3.9% increase in job growth.

Dan Diamond, a staff writer for Politico, noted that at this pace, “health care will become the biggest job sector in America within 3 years.”

Hospitals have gained more jobs in 2015 (+177k) than in the previous six years combined (+152k).

Two of the top 10 jobs of 2016, according to U.S. News & World Report’s annual ranking, are in healthcare, including nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists. Most notably, more than half of the fastest-growing jobs are in health care, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics’s Occupational Outlook Handbook. In the same BLS Report, Nurse Practitioner positions led the way with an expected 35% growth until 2024.
