Mary Kutchin, MSN, RN, CNS , nursing faculty member at Kent State University, recently received an Outstanding Teaching Award. Kitchen was one of three recipients for 2018, an annual honor awarded by Kent State to recognize full-time, non-tenure track, and part-time faculty members who are nominated by their students and peers for being among the most dedicated and highly effective professors at the university.

Lindsey Lucas, a spring 2018 BSN graduate, tells Kent.edu, “Professor Kutchin is the type of leader that every university wants in their classrooms, the type of teacher every parent wishes their college student had, the nurse that patients want to advocate for them and the go-to person every student needs.”

Kutchin was nominated by students who believe she is a strong communicator and there to help when a need arises. They praised her teaching style of using real life examples to explain subject matter and her ability to challenge them while maintaining fun, entertaining lessons.

Another of Kutchin’s students, Kaitlyn Parker, a spring 2018 BSN graduate, reports, “She challenges her students to ‘think like a nurse.’ If a student is struggling to come to the answer Mary wants, she is more than willing to help the student by guiding them through the thinking process.”

Kutchin has been a faculty member of Kent State University since 2012, teaching a variety of courses in the College of Nursing. She is also a Pre-licensure Testing Coordinator for Kaplan and has experience in hospital administration and nursing leadership. Her expertise in accreditation standards has allowed Kutchin to develop and manage programs for case management and disease management. She earned her BSN from the University of Akron, her MSN from Kent State University, and is currently pursuing her PhD in Nursing at Kent State.
