This generous gift to the New York University (NYU) College of Nursing was awarded by Howard and Rose-Marie Meyers. Mr. Meyers is a graduate of the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at NYU and serves as a trustee for the university. Ms. Meyers is a graduate of Syracuse University and worked as a nurse for New York City.

The majority of their donation will fund scholarships for nursing students who are the first in their family to go to college or those who are putting themselves through school. A small remainder of the money will be put toward faculty and academic support.

Along with the announcement of the large donation, the nursing school will also be renamed for Ms. Meyers. Mr. Meyers chose to give the award in her name because of his wife’s love for nursing, and because they were both the first in their families to go to college and came from modest means before their successful careers.

The donation from the Meyers family is one of the largest ever made in support of nursing education, and it will help the nursing college at NYU continue to make great advances. NYU’s nursing program was founded in 1932, housed within the education school due to its curriculum design for training school nurses. It became an independent college last fall, and moved into a new $140 million building at First Avenue and East 26th Street, where it shares the space with the dental college and bioengineering program. NYU’s new building is designed for nursing, including a 37-bed simulation center. The nursing school contains 1,600 students and attracts a large number of minority students.

Ms. Meyers is in declining health which urged Mr. Meyers to make his donation to NYU now. He is honored to give a donation that will help thousands of students and future nurses have the opportunity to go to NYU and become a great benefit to their communities and society.
