Two unions that represent nurses in New York State are actively pursuing safe-staffing criteria in Albany to pass a mandatory staffing law.
New York State Nurses Association, the state’s largest nurses union, and the Communications Workers of America are attempting to gain support to pass resolutions supporting the state legislation known as the Safe Staffing for Quality Care Act. California implemented a similar law in 2010, which has since been supported by researchers at the University of Pennsylvania. In the study, researchers compared data from hospitals across California, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and found that lower patient-nurse ratios were associated with fewer patient deaths.
The unions have reached local city leaders to communicate the value of safe staffing to outcomes at hospitals across New York state and hope that law-makers address this issue in 2016.
