BASIC DESCRIPTION

As primary care providers, oncology nurse practitioners (NPs) provide comprehensive care to patients who have a diagnosis of cancer, as well as to their families. In collaboration with health care team members, the oncology NP conducts a thorough physical assessment, writes prescriptions for medications, administers therapeutic measures, and evaluates care provided.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Registered nurse preparation and NP certification are required; there are several certifications available for oncology NPs such as the Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Specialist by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation.
