Dr. Joan Slager, CNM, DNP, FACNM, was recently named Dean of Nursing at Frontier Nursing University (FNU). Slager was named FNU’s Interim Dean of Nursing in March 2018 and previously served as the program director for FNU’s Post-Master’s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.
Slager graduated from Frontier’s School of Midwifery and Family Nursing in 1991, earned her Master of Science in Nursing from Case Western University in 1993, and earned her DNP degree from Oakland University in 2008. She also helped establish Bronson Women’s Service in Michigan in 1993 which is now Michigan’s largest midwifery service with 14 midwives. Dr. Slager served as the practice director for the hospital-based practice from 1995 to 2016.
Slager tells Frontier.edu, “I am honored to be a part of this pivotal time in the long and proud history of Frontier Nursing University. Our strategic growth is vital as we work toward fulfilling our mission. We are striving to address healthcare gaps in our communities by educating nurse-midwives and nurse practitioners to serve all individuals and all communities, with an emphasis on diverse, rural and underserved populations.”
Dr. Slager has served two terms as Chair of the Business Section of the Division of Standards and Practice for the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) and is currently serving as the Treasurer on the ACNM Board of Directors. She has also lectured on billing and coding and other business and clinical topics in the past.
Slager has also been honored as the Dorothea Lang Pioneer Award recipient from the American College of Nurse-Midwives Foundation in 2008 and the Distinguished Service to Alma Mater Award winner from FNU in 2015.

Effective as of September, Gwendolyn Gaston was appointed the new Dean of Nursing at the Dallas Nursing Institute (DNI) to kick off the 2016 academic year. Throughout her appointment at DNI, Gaston is expected to help further advance the nursing programs and prepare exceptional future nurses to enter the nursing workforce. Gaston will also be in charge of efforts to broaden academic programs offered by the nonprofit institution and continue DNI’s service to the larger Dallas community.
Gaston holds a diploma in nursing from Kings County School of Nursing (Brooklyn College of CUNY), Master of Science and Bachelor of Sciences degrees in Nursing from the University of Phoenix, Southfield, MI, and she is currently working toward her Doctor of Nursing Practice degree from Capella University, Minneapolis, MN.
Dean of Nursing is not Gaston’s first role at DNI. Previous roles at DNI include Assistant Director for Nursing Laboratories and Didactic Faculty Nursing, and her most recent role as Director of Nursing for the Associate Degree of Nursing Program. Prior to working at DNI, Gaston held positions as Interim Director of Urgent Care at Cayuga Medical Center in Ithaca, NY; Senior Director of Ambulatory Clinical Services at Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, TX; and adjunct faculty at Davenport University in Dearborn, MI.
The faculty and students at DNI are excited to welcome Gaston into her new role as Dean of Nursing. With a 10-year track record of service to the Institute, Gaston has proven results in elevating student outcomes through her experience in academic administration, admissions, recruitment, and curriculum development.
