The University of Southern Mississippi (Southern Miss) has announced the launch of a fully online PhD program in Nursing Leadership. The degree offers nurses an opportunity to earn an advanced degree that will open up new career opportunities in a range of healthcare and education settings.
Dr. Tom Hutchinson, director of the Office of Online Learning at Southern Miss, tells News.USM.edu, “We understand today’s nurses are very busy. This program allows them to complete everything from their residency to their dissertation 100 percent online. These students never have to worry about coming to campus.”
The Nursing Leadership curriculum emphasizes original research and offers opportunities for careers in research, teaching, and leadership roles in universities, colleges, and healthcare organizations in a fully online format that doesn’t require working nurses to leave their jobs to further their education. Nurses who have a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree can complete the PhD program in 60 credit hours, and nurses with a master’s degree can earn the PhD in 48 credit hours.
A loan program is also available to nurses interested in pursuing a PhD in Nursing Leadership from Southern Miss. The loan can pay up to 85 percent of the tuition for this degree, helping to fill the growing need for higher education nursing faculty.
