Nurse of the Week: Iowa Nurse Jamie Miller Saves Child from Drowning

Our Nurse of the Week is Jamie Miller, a licensed practical nurse (LPN) from Marshalltown, IA, who saved a child from drowning while off duty at a local pool. Many people who are CPR certified never find themselves in a real emergency situation, but Jamie jumped to the challenge when faced with an endangered child.

Miller tells TimesRepublic.com, “I had never had to [administer] CPR before. I didn’t even think; I just took over.”

Miller was celebrating St. Patrick’s day with her husband and two sons at the local poolside of Meskwaki Bingo Casino Hotel when her husband noticed a little girl was facedown in the water not moving. The 5-year-old child was pulled from the pool by her older brother while Miller’s husband called 911 and she began administering CPR.

The girl had turned purple and had no pulse but Miller managed to get her breathing again by the time emergency services arrived. The child was rushed to a hospital in Iowa City via Life Flight to treat her for the large amount of water still in her lungs, but she was fortunately discharged the next day and is back to her normal routine according to TimesRepublican.com.

After her recovery, the girl’s family reached out to EMT services to ask to be put in touch with the Millers who were pleased to hear she was doing well. Miller credits her nursing background and motherly instincts for her lifesaving act.
